Le titre original de L’Appel de la forêt est The Call of the Wild, que l’on peut traduire par L’Appel sauvage. Son auteur, Jack London (1876-1916) l’a entendu et lui a répondu. D’abord, il est un adolescent travailleur et vagabond, tour à tour vendeur de journaux, cheminot, pilleur d’huîtres, chasseur de phoques, ouvrier dans une conserverie de saumon. Il a trois passions : les livres, la mer et la route. Jack London est un « hobo » : il traverse les États-Unis au gré de la marche ou des trains, goûtant la liberté des grands espaces. Un Arthur Rimbaud américain, en quelque sorte. Mais socialiste, et sensible à toutes les expériences de la solidarité humaine. En 1896, la rumeur apporte aux oreilles des hommes que des territoires aurifères ont été découverts dans la région du Klondike, entre le Canada et la province américaine d’Alaska. C’est le début de « la ruée vers l’or », une aventure qui, de 1896 à 1899, jette cent mille hommes sur les pistes sauvages du Grand Nord. Le 25 juillet 1897, Jack London s’embarque pour le Klondike et l’inconnu. Il découvre une humanité régie par des lois primitives, imposées par la nature, la lutte pour la vie et la quête sans merci de l’or. Dans la cabane qu’il occupe à Dawson City, il a laissé la trace de son passage : « Jack London, mineur et écrivain. 27/I/1898 ». La légende dit que c’est là qu’il rencontre le chien Jack, modèle de Buck. Le scorbut ne lui permet pas de poursuivre cette aventure et il quitte le Grand Nord au printemps 1898. Plusieurs histoires de bêtes naissent de cette source d’inspiration : The Son of the Wolf, recueil de nouvelles (1900), The Call of The Wild, publié en 1903 et White Fang (Croc-Blanc), en 1906. L’Appel de la forêt est un grand succès : six millions d’exemplaires du roman sont vendus.
