Quatrième enfant d'une famille paysanne, Knut Hamsun – pseudonyme de Knut Pedersen – naît le 4 août 1859 à Garmostraet, un village situé près de Lom (Norvège). Devenu apprenti cordonnier, il étudie en autodidacte la littérature et commence à écrire des poèmes. En 1888, il publie anonymement dans une revue un récit semi-autobiographique d'une grande finesse psychologique intitulé "La Faim" qui connaît un grand succès et lance sa carri§re littéraire. Son oeuvre investit désormais un vaste champ social et historique tout en célébrant la nature et le vagabondage comme expérience existentielle. Par élistisme nietzschéen, il soutient l'Allemagne hitlérienne lorsqu'éclate la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Il décède le 19 février 1952 dans sa ferme de Norholm, près de Grimstad.
