Résumé

Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms is a war novel set during World War I. It follows Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian army, who falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a British nurse grieving the death of her fiancé. Their relationship grows against the backdrop of war, providing both solace and tension as Henry becomes increasingly disillusioned with the brutality around him. After Henry is wounded and Catherine cares for him, their love deepens, and they dream of a life away from the chaos of the front. However, as the war intensifies, Henry deserts the army during a retreat and reunites with Catherine. They flee to Switzerland, seeking refuge and peace, seemingly beyond the reach of conflict. The novel ends tragically when Catherine dies in childbirth, leaving Henry alone with his grief. Hemingway’s sparse style underscores themes of love, loss, the randomness of suffering, and the futility of war. The farewell in the title becomes both a rejection of war and a lament for love lost.
