Agatha Christie (auteur)

Agatha Christie est née de mère britannique et de père américain, le 15 septembre 1890 en Angleterre. Durant la guerre, elle devient infirmière bénévole et se familiarise avec les poisons et autres drogues, connaissances qu’on retrouve dans tous ses romans. En 1920, elle édite son premier roman, Une mystérieuse affaire de Styles où apparaît Hercule Poirot, le célèbre enquêteur belge. Auteur de plus de 70 romans ou nouvelles, Agatha Christie est une figure majeure du roman policier dans le monde entier : son œuvre est traduite dans plus de cent langues. Elle meurt le 12 janvier 1976, après avoir adressé un dernier adieu à son public, à travers la mort de son personnage devenu culte, dans Hercule Poirot quitte la scène.
Josephine Tey (auteur)

Josephine Tey est née en 1896 en Écosse. Elle est l'auteur de nombreux romans policiers, notamment La Fille du temps , le plus célèbre et le plus controversé du fait de ses prises de position historiques. Dramaturge reconnue, elle a écrit une douzaine de pièces sous le pseudonyme de Gordon Daviot, dont Richard of Bordeaux , qui connut un véritable succès. Josephine Tey meurt à Londres, le 13 février 1952.
Arthur Conan Doyle (auteur)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, immense écrivain anglais, est notamment le père de Sherlock Holmes. Médecin, il s’engage dans la guerre entre l’Angleterre et les Boers, dont il est le premier à raconter dans le détail ce dur conflit colonial.
Edgar Allan Poe (auteur)

Né à Boston en 1809, orphelin adopté par une famille de Richmond, Edgar Allan Poe est aussi brillant dans les études qu'aberrant dans ses rapports avec autrui et sa vie amoureuse. Alcoolique invétéré, il est à la fois journaliste, poète et le plus singulier des conteurs fantastiques. Il vit tantôt à New York, tantôt à Baltimore, où il meurt en 1849.
Dorothy L. Sayers (auteur)

Dorothy Leigh Sayers (1893-1957) compte parmi les reines incontestées de l’âge d’or du roman policier anglais. Après de brillantes études à Oxford, elle séjourne en France comme professeur d’anglais. De retour à Londres, elle travaille dans une agence de publicité, puis s’intéresse aux mouvements socialistes qui façonnent la société anglaise de l’Entre-deux-guerres avant de publier en 1923 son premier roman, Lord Peter et l’inconnu, mettant en scène l’aristocratique détective Lord Peter Wimsey. Elle apporte un ton humoristique au traditionnel roman d’énigme, quelques traits acérés contre la société bien-pensante de l’époque, et affuble son héros d’une vie sentimentale. À partir de 1940, elle se consacre à sa passion, la littérature médiévale.
Raymond Chandler (auteur)

Raymond Chandler est né à Chicago le 23 juillet 1888 d'un père américain et d'une mère d'origine irlandaise. Après le divorce de ses parents, il suit sa mère en Europe (Angleterre, France, Allemagne). Á 24 ans il s'installe en Californie où il écrira bientôt pour les plus grands studios d'Hollywood. Il meurt le 26 mars 1959.
