Parmi les noms qui désignaient l'Église durant le premier millénaire, celui de « Fraternit? était l'un des plus significatifs. C'était même son nom propre qui exprimait la relation vitale unissant les baptisés au « Christ-Frère ». Or, curieusement, aucune étude de théologie historique approfondie n'avait été menée sur ce sujet. Elle vient d'être réalisée par un théologien qui est aussi un pasteur. Fruit d'une longue et patiente recherche, elle se présente en trois volumes qui remettent en valeur un aspect fondamental trop oublié de ce qu'est l'Église. Cette première partie porte sur les trois premiers siècles durant lesquels l'Église se donne le nom de Fraternité. Un second tome montrera bientôt le fondement théologique de ce titre mis en relief au cours des IVe et Ve siècles : l'Église est « Fraternité en Christ ». Le troisième tome manifestera que, même si la notion de fraternité a connu un temps de sommeil durant les VIe et VIIe siècles, les moines ont remis à l'honneur, dès le VIIIe siècle, la conception de l'Église comme « Sainte Fraternit?, vivant de la Trinité et ouverte au monde entier.

Among those words that symbolized the Church during its first millennium, ‘Fraternity’ is one of the most significant. Indeed, this word expressed the vital relationship between those baptised into the ‘Brotherhood of Christ’. Yet, curiously, no in-depth historical and theological study had treated this subject until now. This book, written by a theologian who is also a pastor, is the fruit of long and patient research. Presented in three volumes, it lays emphasis on a fundamental and too easily forgotten aspect of what the Church represents. This first part focuses on the first three centuries, during which the Church referred to itself as a ‘Brotherhood’. Volume two explains the theological foundation of this title, which was accentuated during the 4th and 5th centuries, when the Church was the ‘Brotherhood of Christ’. The third volume shows how from the 8th century onwards – despite a lull during the 6th and 7th centuries - monks restored the concept of the Church as a ‘Holy Brotherhood’, living in the Trinity and open to the entire world.
