Résumé
--
Bernanos! Who could think of a better example to grasp the possible links between literature and theology? His fictional work is underpinned by the theology of Christianity, particularly by the doctrine of the communion of saints wherein all humanity is bound in a great mystic body, whose stakes are the history of Salvation, where the suffering of some can contribute to the redemption of others. The very structure of fictional narration is in harmony with these theological schemes. Readers will note the specific treatment of chronology, with certain narrative events placed at the intersection of time and eternity. But not only his literary works are concerned here: the author also detects this theological basis in his more personal texts, written by Bernanos at the beginning of his exile during WW2, and in his literary and political opinions about certain of his contemporaries, such as François Mauriac. Éric Benoit’s essay is a subtle and rigorous exploration of Bernanos, the perfect example of the magnificent osmosis between theological conscience and the literary act through which it unfolds.
