    Ancien élève de l'École polytechnique, ingénieur au corps des Mines, Pierre Avenas a été directeur de la recherche et développement dans l'industrie chimique. Il s'est également intéressé aux sciences naturelles et, passant de la nature aux mots employés pour la décrire, il a eu l'idée qui, après sa rencontre avec Henriette Walter, a abouti à un livre en 2003, L'Étonnante Histoire du nom des mammifères , aux Éditions Robert Laffont. D'autres ont suivi : La Mystérieuse Histoire du nom des oiseaux (2007), La Fabuleuse Histoire du nom des poissons (2011) et La Majestueuse Histoire du nom des arbres (2017).
