Auteur

  • Edgar Allan Poe (auteur)

  • Abraham Lincoln (auteur)

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was a store owner, postmaster, county surveyor, and lawyer, before sitting in both the House of Representatives and Senate. He was our 16th President, being elected twice, and serving until his assassination in 1865. He is best known for leading the United States through the Civil War, and his anti-slavery stance.

  • Herman Melville (auteur)

Melville was born into a wealthy family in New York City but faced financial difficulties after his father's death. He married Elizabeth Shaw and had a close relationship with his siblings. Melville's education was interrupted by his father's death, but he showed promise as a student. He worked as a clerk and a school teacher before embarking on a voyage at sea, which inspired his first successful novels, "Typee" and "Omoo." Melville's later works, such as "Moby-Dick" and "Billy Budd," were not as well-received during his lifetime. He faced personal struggles and experienced a decline in popularity, but his works have since been recognized as significant contributions to American literature.

  • Walt Whitman (auteur)

Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.

  • Stephen Crane (auteur)

  • Gertrude Stein (auteur)

GERTRUDE STEIN (1874–1946) was an American Jewish writer, poet, and art collector who spent most of her life in France. Her body of work include Three Lives, Tender Buttons, The Making of Americans, and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. Not only was she an innovator in literature and a supporter of modern poetry and art, she was the friend and mentor of those who visited her at her now-famous home: Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, and Guillaume Apollinaire.
Louisa May Alcott mourut à Boston en 1888.
