Née Elisabeth Wehner en 1896 de parents allemands, la jeune Betty passe toute son enfance dans le quartier de Williamsburg, à Brooklyn. En 1919, elle épouse George Smith, un étudiant en droit dont elle aura deux filles. La famille s'installe dans le Michigan, où Betty suit des cours de journalisme. En 1938, elle divorce, s'établit en Caroline du Nord avec ses filles et multiplie les petits travaux.
L'année 1943 est un tournant puisqu'elle rencontre Joseph Jones, qui deviendra son second mari, et que paraît Le Lys de Brooklyn (Belfond, 2014 ; 10/18, 2016), roman largement autobiographique qui va devenir instantanément un immense best-seller. Le succès est tel qu'il sera adapté par Elia Kazan au cinéma en 1945 et joué en comédie musicale à Broadway en 1951. Elle écrira ensuite trois autres romans, dont le très délicat La Joie du matin , sorte de suite au Lys de Brooklyn .
Betty Smith s'est éteinte en 1972 dans le Connecticut, à l'âge de soixante-quinze ans.
