One of France’s greatest dramatists, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622 – 1673), better known by his stage name, Molière, was born in Paris. While his father fully intended for Molière to become a furnisher for the French Royal family, much like himself, Molière initially decided he wanted to work as an actor. However, after trying to establish a theatre company in Paris, spending some time in prison, and touring with a theatre troupe, Molière eventually turned his attention to writing plays. His first, ‘L’Étourdi; ou, les contretemps,’ was staged in Lyons in 1655. However, it was three years later, when performing his ‘Le Docteur Lamoureux' that Molière found fame, falling under the wing of the king’s brother, Phillipe.Although little is known about his later life, his plays are staged worldwide to this day. Many have been adapted for film and television, including ‘Don Juan,’ starring Jacques Weber.

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, dit Molière, est né en 1622 à Paris. Fils d'un père tapissier, il perd sa mère à l'âge de dix ans. Après avoir suivi des études dans un collège jésuite, il se destine un temps à une carrière d'avocat, mais sa rencontre avec Tiberio Fiorelli, dit Scaramouche, et avec Madeleine Béjart, le détourne de ses projets. Ils décident de monter une troupe de comédiens, L'Illustre-Théâtre, qui s'inspire de la tradition italienne de la commedia dell'arte. Ensemble, ils connaissent des succès divers en province et dans les salles parisiennes. Molière a apporté au théâtre un regard incisif sur le monde, qu'il doit à son observation minutieuse des caractères et de leurs travers. À la fois auteur et acteur, on lui doit nombre de pièces comiques, notamment : Les Précieuses ridicules (1659), Sganarelle ou Le Cocu imaginaire (1660), L'École des femmes (1662), Dom Juan (1665) ou encore Les Fourberies de Scapin (1671). Il meurt sur scène lors d'une dernière représentation du Malade imaginaire en 1673.
