Née Kathleen Beauchamp (1888-1923), Katherine Mansfield quitte à 18 ans sa Nouvelle-Zélande natale pour étudier en Angleterre, où sa nature libre offusque et fascine. D’abord attirée par la musique, elle suit les traces de sa cousine, la romancière Elizabeth von Arnim, en se consacrant aux lettres. Ce météore de la littérature néo-zélandaise marque l’histoire du modernisme et révolutionne le genre de la nouvelle. L’intense écrivaine meurt de la tuberculose à l’Institut Gurdjieff, près de Fontainebleau, à seulement 34 ans. À l’annonce de sa mort, Virginia Woolf confie à son journal : « Elle avait la vibration. »
