    Hermann Melville est né en 1819, dans une famille aisée de New-York. La mort de son père en 1832 contraint pourtant ses frères et bientôt lui-même à travailler. En 1839 Hermann s’engage sur un navire marchant, cette expérience lui inspire ses premiers ouvrages qui connaissent un vif succès. Mais il n’est pas satisfait de ses écrits, et il se dirige en 1840 vers une écriture plus intérieure, et plus allégorique. Il perd ainsi son public, et la parution de Moby Dick en 1851 passe inaperçue. Hermann Melville voit sa carrière décliner, et il meurt dans l’indifférence générale en 1863. Ce n’est qu’en 1924, lors d’une réédition de son œuvre que ses ouvrages connaîtront la célébrité qu’ils ont acquis aujourd’hui
