Jack London est né en 1876 à San Francisco. Il passe son enfance dans le ranch de son beau-père : une enfance dure, presque misérable. Poussé par son tempérament aventureux, il quitte très jeune la maison pour s'embarquer comme mousse; il a 15 ans à peine. Par la suite, il exerce toutes sortes de métiers, de pêcheur d'huîtres à garde-côte. De son voyage en Alaska parmi les chercheurs d'or, Jack London rapporte «L'Appel du monde sauvage» [«L'Appel de la forêt»], où l'on respire le souffle de la grande aventure, l'odeur de l'or mêlée à celle de la misère. Mais il s'installe alors à Oakland, en Californie, et décide de se consacrer à la littérature. Malgré le succès de ses nouvelles, il déclarera toutefois qu'il déteste écrire et ne le fait que pour gagner sa vie. L'attrait des terres inconnues sera le plus fort : il se fait engager comme reporter lors de la guerre sino-japonaise. À son retour, il réalise le rêve de sa vie : se faire construire un bateau, le «Snark», à bord duquel il entreprend un tour du monde: mais il n'ira pas plus loin que l'Australie. Jack London s'est donné la mort en 1916.
