Voltaire, de son vrai nom François-Marie Arouet, naît à Paris en 1694. Noble et historiographe du roi Louis XV, il a pourtant des rapports conflictuels avec la monarchie. Grand voyageur, il effectue de nombreux séjours en Europe, par exil ou par choix : Angleterre, Prusse, Suisse... Connu de son vivant pour ses tragédies plus que pour ses écrits philosophiques, c'est pourtant comme philosophe qu'il est passé à la postérité. Il meurt à Paris en 1778, une douzaine d'années avant la Révolution Française qu'il a contribué à inspirer.
