              James Joyce est né le 2 février 1882 à Rathgar, dans la banlieue de Dublin. Dès 1897, il commence à écrire. Il entre à University College en 1898, et c'est en 1900 qu'il fait un véritable début littéraire, avec un article sur Ibsen. En 1920, James Joyce s'installe à Paris sur les conseils d'Ezra Pound. Il fait la connaissance d'Adrienne Monnier, de Sylvia Beach, qui publie Ulysse en 1922, de Valery Larbaud, qui le présente au Tout-Paris littéraire.
