Oliver Twist jest spędza dzieciństwo w ponurym sierocińcu. Głód, zimno i nieludzkie traktowanie to codzienność wychowanków "bidula". W dniu dziewiątych urodzin zostaje przeniesiony do innego przytułku, z którego zostaje wyrzucony na bruk, gdy prosi o dokładkę jedzenia. Od tej chwili młody bohater jest zdany tylko na siebie. Na naiwnego i dobrodusznego chłopca czekają mroczne strony życia wykluczonych. Czy los chłopca ma jeszcze szansę się odmienić?Losy Olivera od lat niezmiennie wzruszają serca czytelników. Powieść Dickensa była wielokrotnie ekranizowana, a w najnowszej adaptacji (reż. Roman Polański, 2005) w tytułową rolę wcielił się Barney Clark.
