Résumé

Barnaby Rudge (1840) is de tweede historische roman van Dickens en erg geïnspireerd op de romans van Sir Walter Scott. Barnaby Rudge is een goedhartige jongen die ongewild betrokken raakt bij de anti-katholieke opstanden van 1780, de Gordon Riots. Hij wordt ter dood veroordeeld, maar uiteindelijk gered door slotenmaker Gabriel Varden. In beeldend proza beschrijft Dickens de bestorming van de Newgate-gevangenis; diepgaand zijn de beschrijvingen van de complexe relaties en liefdes van zijn kleurrijke personages. Barnaby's huisdier, Grip de Raaf, inspireerde Edgar Allen Poe tot het schrijven van zijn beroemde gedicht 'The Raven'.
