"His Last Bow" is a collection of eight short-stories about the adventures of the detective Sherlock Holmes. Here are tales of murder, abductions, stolen information, and secrets. We follow Holmes as he endeavours to solve each of these mysteries. The War Service of Sherlock Holmes" (1917)Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. After his studies, he worked as a ship’s surgeon on various boats. During the Second Boer War, he was an army doctor in South Africa. When he came back to the United Kingdom, he opened his own practice and started writing crime books. He is best known for his thrilling stories about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He published four novels and more than 50 short-stories starring the detective and Dr Watson, and they play an important role in the history of crime fiction. Other than the Sherlock Holmes series, Doyle wrote around thirty more books, in genres such as science-fiction, fantasy, historical novels, but also poetry, plays, and non-fiction.

Né en 1859 et mort en 1930, sir Arthur Conan Doyle n'était pas à l'origine écrivain mais médecin. C'est comme médecin de bord qu'à vingt-deux ans, il s'embarque sur un navire et parcourt les mers, de l'Arctique aux côtes de l'Afrique. Il prend part aux campagnes du Soudan et à la guerre des Boers. C'est d'ailleurs à une œuvre patriotique sur la guerre en Afrique qu'il doit d'être anobli par la reine Victoria.
En effet, le roman historique est son genre de prédilection : Conan Doyle se veut l'émule de Walter Scott. C'est pourtant la première aventure de Sherlock Holmes qui lui vaudra un succès immédiat, un succès tel que le personnage finira par rendre jaloux son auteur... Celui-ci tentera de faire disparaître Sherlock Holmes, mais le public le forcera à ressusciter le détective, toujours accompagné du non moins célèbre docteur Watson.Pourtant l'auteur n'avait rien à envier à son héros : également énergique et sportif, il parvint lui-même à élucider plusieurs énigmes policières.
