Charles Dickens escribe “El grillo del hogar” en 1845, dividido en tres jornadas construye un cuento fantástico en el que un grillo se transmuta en sucesivas hadas. El grillo, símbolo de la paz en los hogares humildes, es el eje del relato: en el primer canto, el grillo está feliz; en el segundo, guarda silencio; en el tercero, vuelve a cantar de nuevo. “El grillo del hogar” conjuga las principales habilidades de Dickens: por un lado, el humor con el que presenta a sus personajes o dialoga burlonamente con el lector; por el otro, la utilización de los recursos básicos de la trama, desde la insólita casualidad hasta el reconocimiento de los personajes.
