Il re di Britannia Cimbelino e la sua regina hanno entrambi un figlio dal precedente matrimonio: il re è padre di una femmina, Imogene, mentre la regina ha un maschio, Cloten. Per ovvie ragioni dinastiche i due sovrani vorrebbero combinare il matrimonio tra i due ragazzi: ma c’è il doppio problema che Cloten è un giovane violento e un po' scemo, mentre Imogene è innamorata di Postumo, il figlio orfano (e povero) di un famoso generale del regno. Una volta scoperto che il suo amore è ricambiato, Imogene decide di sposare Postumo in segreto, scatenando la collera della regina che decide di separarli una volta per tutte: ha così inizio una serie di vicende in cui l'incombente guerra tra romani e britanni fa da sfondo ad una romantica storia di amore proibito. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) è considerato il più importante scrittore e drammaturgo inglese.Molto prolifico nei suoi 25 anni di attività poetica, scrisse 37 testi teatrali, 154 sonetti e una serie di altri poemi. Sia nelle tragedie che nelle commedie riuscì a coniugare il gusto popolare dell'epoca con una caratterizzazione ampia dei personaggi e una poetica raffinata che incontrava il favore delle classi più alte. Tra i titoli più celebri e ampiamente trasposti ricordiamo "Romeo e Giulietta" (1597), "Il mercante di Venezia" e "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate" (1600), "Amleto" (1603), "Macbeth" (1606).

Shakespeare was born to a successful glover and educated at the King's New School in Stratford. He married Anne Hathaway and had three children. Shakespeare's plays were performed by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, making him a wealthy man. He continued to act in his own plays and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare's last three plays were collaborations, and he retired to Stratford before his death. His work has had a lasting impact on theatre and literature, and he is considered a genius and a classic of the German Weimar era. There have been doubts about the authorship of his works, but they are considered fringe theories.
