Polissene e Leonte sono due grandi amici di infanzia, rispettivamente re di Boemia e di Sicilia. Rimasto per nove mesi alla corte dell'amico in Sicilia, Polissene si accinge adesso a tornare nel proprio regno, ma Leonte, dispiaciuto per la partenza, lo supplica di restare e prega anche la propria moglie, Ermione, di dissuaderlo dall'andar via. Inizialmente inamovibile, Polissene diventa prima titubante e infine cede alle lusinghe di Ermione, decidendo di prolungare il soggiorno; Leonte si scopre però turbato dall'eccessiva confidenza tra i due, e ordina che l'amico venga avvelenato. Inizia così una storia dal sapore agrodolce, fatta di equivoci, gelosia e penitenza, narrata con i toni tipici della tragicommedia shakesperiana. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) è considerato il più importante scrittore e drammaturgo inglese.Molto prolifico nei suoi 25 anni di attività poetica, scrisse 37 testi teatrali, 154 sonetti e una serie di altri poemi. Sia nelle tragedie che nelle commedie riuscì a coniugare il gusto popolare dell'epoca con una caratterizzazione ampia dei personaggi e una poetica raffinata che incontrava il favore delle classi più alte. Tra i titoli più celebri e ampiamente trasposti ricordiamo "Romeo e Giulietta" (1597), "Il mercante di Venezia" e "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate" (1600), "Amleto" (1603), "Macbeth" (1606).

Shakespeare was born to a successful glover and educated at the King's New School in Stratford. He married Anne Hathaway and had three children. Shakespeare's plays were performed by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, making him a wealthy man. He continued to act in his own plays and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare's last three plays were collaborations, and he retired to Stratford before his death. His work has had a lasting impact on theatre and literature, and he is considered a genius and a classic of the German Weimar era. There have been doubts about the authorship of his works, but they are considered fringe theories.
