Many of her works became adapted to musicals, movies, and TV shows. Along with her husband Hubert Bland, she was among the first members of the Fabian society - a socialist debating club. A path in London close to her home was named "Railway Children Walk" in her honor, manifesting her legacy as one of the pioneers within the children’s fantasy genre.

Elle est souvent citée comme étant la première autrice jeunesse moderne, ainsi que celle qui a inventé le roman fantastique moderne. Outre sa carrière littéraire, E. Nesbit était une militante socialiste engagée : elle fut la co-fondatrice du Fabian Society, le précurseur du Parti travailliste. Ses convictions socialistes se reflétaient souvent dans ses histoires, où elle abordait des thèmes tels que l’égalité, la justice sociale et l’empathie envers les classes défavorisées.
