Mais c'est son roman, Le Portrait de Dorian Gray , qui lui assure le succès. A l'heure où l'homosexualité est punie par la loi, la relation passionnée qu'il entretient avec Lord Alfred Douglas le conduit à purger deux années de travaux forcés. A sa sortie, c'est un homme brisé qui rejoint son amant en Italie.
Enterré au Père-Lachaise, Oscar Wilde reste une figure majeure de la littérature dont l'atmosphère singulière continue de provoquer l'admiration.
