He is best known for his scandalous masterpiece 'Madame Bovary' (1857) which is considered as a watershed not only in 19th-century realism but in world literature. It has been adapted for the TV many times, most notably as a three part BBC series in 2000 and a movie in 2014.His works 'Salammbô' (1862), 'A Sentimental Education' (1869), and 'The Memoirs of a Madman' (1838) are just few examples of his literary craftsmanship. A complete perfectionist in his writing, Flaubert has been admired for his aesthetic ideals and his work influenced the development of the novel in Europe, America and around the globe.

Gustave Flaubert est né en 1821 à Honfleur, dans une famille bourgeoise. Adolescent, il est renvoyé du lucée de Rouen indiscipline et passe le bac en candidat libre. Lorsqu’il arrive à Paris pour mener des études de droit, il rencontre Victor et Maxime Du Camp qui lui font connaître le milieu littéraire et romantique et qui lui font abandonner le droit. Il retourne en 1844 en Normandie et s’installe au Croisset où il commence à écrire. Après avoir voyagé en Italie quelques années, il entreprend la rédaction de Madame Bovary en 1851, roman qui lui permettra d’être reconnu pour son écriture réaliste et d’une grande force psychologique, mais qui subira lors de sa parution en 1857 une condamnation pour outrage aux bonnes mœurs. Il partage lors sa vie entre Paris et le Croisset et fréquente les milieux mondains du Second Empire, ainsi que les centres littéraires, où il rencontre Baudelaire, Sainte-Beuve ou encore les frères Goncourt. Il publie L’Éducation sentimentale en 1869, puis en 1871 Trois Contes. Il entame alors la rédaction de Bouvard et Pécuchet, œuvre satirique qu’il laissera inachevée et qui ne sera publiée qu’à titre posthume, en 1881. Ses dernières années sont sombres, il est ruiné et malade et meurt en 1880. Zola, Alphonse Daudet, Théodore de Banville ou encore Maupassant, que Flaubert avait encouragé à écrire, sont présents lors de son enterrement à Rouen.
