Rabindranâth Tagore (1861-1941) fut marqué dans son enfance par le climat panthéiste du mouvement religieux dont son père était le maître spirituel. Après des études en Angleterre, il revient en Inde, à Bolpur, y fonde son école (la Voix universelle), puis sillonne le monde. Antinationaliste, il a toujours milité pour la Paix et la non-violence. Auteur de nombreux recueils de poèmes tels que L'Offrande lyrique, qui lui valut une célébrité mondiale immédiate, Le Jardinier d'amour ou La Jeune Lune, il a reçu le prix Nobel de littérature en 1913.
