Né en 1861 à Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore fait ses études de droit en Angleterre. Il reçoit le Prix Nobel de Littérature en 1913. Il parcourt le monde, rencontre Bergson et Romain Rolland et fonde une université au nord de Calcutta en 1918. À la fin de sa vie, il soutient Gandhi dans sa lutte. Il meurt en 1941.
