Résumé
This engaging summary presents an analysis of The Song of the World by Jean Giono, a novel which examines nature and man’s place in it. The novel recounts the quest of Antonio and Sailor, two friends, to find Sailor’s missing son. It turns out that he has gone off with a girl from a nearby clan, which sets off a wave of events that will have life-changing consequences for all those involved. The Song of the World was released in 1934 and was heavily inspired by Walt Whitman’s poetry and the Iliad. Jean Giono was a French author whose writings are tinged with a profound sense of humanism. His experience in the army, and the accusations of collaboration with the Nazis that were later levelled against him, had a marked influence on his later works. As a result, many of his books concern war and nature. He died in 1970.
